Update on Nessa Records Reissues, Gillespie Big Band With Monk
Posted: Apr 12th, 2008 by David in Jazz Notes
Word is that we’ll probably see the following reissues from Nessa Records in several months: Roscoe Mitchell’s Nonaah (with bonus material), Charles Tyler’s Saga of the Outlaws, and Wadada Leo Smith’s Procession of the Great Ancestry. That’s quite a haul of prime mid-1970s and early-1980s avant-jazz. Also, still forthcoming from Uptown Records: a collection of Dizzy Gillespie’s 1946 big-band broadcasts with a certain Mr. Thelonious Monk on piano. Much of the work on this purportedly 2-CD set is done, but there’s no firm release date yet; I’ll post more info as it becomes available. (You can hear one of these broadcasts on the Night Lights program Side Monk.)

The release date for the Gillespie big band set is June 17th, along with a Charlie Parker in Washington, DC 1948 CD. No details on either one, though.
