More from last Friday evening’s Afterglow program devoted to jazz and jazz-vocal recordings of the songs from Show Boat. Hour 2 features several very different versions of “Ol’ Man River,” including a contemporaneous version by Bix Beiderbecke, a current-racing rendition by a Cootie Williams-Duke Ellington small group, and a ballad treatment from Art Pepper, from the sessions for his with-strings album Winter Moon. Also featured: two tracks from the Jimmy Raney-Barry Galbraith “guitar-choir” Show Boat LP.
